Hard objects — fruit pits, bones, glass fragments, utensil pieces — can wedge between the impeller plate and the grind ring, locking the flywheel. In some cases, fibrous material like celery stalks, banana peels or artichoke leaves wraps around the impeller and creates a soft jam that the motor cannot overcome.

The technician uses the hex wrench access point on the bottom of the unit to manually free the flywheel, then tests the motor to confirm it has not overheated or sustained damage from prolonged stalling. If the motor windings are burned out, replacement is typically the most practical option.

Leak Diagnosis Under the Sink

Garbage disposal leaks can originate from several locations — the sink flange connection at the top, the dishwasher inlet on the side, the drain outlet connection or the unit body itself. A leak from the bottom of the disposal housing usually indicates internal seal failure or a cracked body, which means the unit needs replacement rather than repair. Side and top connection leaks are often repairable by retightening, replacing gaskets or resealing the flange.

Disposal and Dishwasher Connection

In most Van Nuys kitchen installations, the dishwasher drain hose connects to a port on the side of the garbage disposal. If a new disposal was recently installed and the knockout plug inside this port was not removed, the dishwasher cannot drain properly.
